scripture

Matthew 23:25-28

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.”

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

thought

Is Jesus really talking to the Pharisees? The Pharisees by practice were those most concern with the law and keeping themselves pure. However, Jesus points would that although they look beautiful on the outside their insides are unclean. Don’t we do the same thing? We paint the barn to make it look pleasing on the outside but inside we are storing manure. We should ask God to clean the inside first then from its cleanness the outside will reflect it.

scripture

Luke 11:34-36

Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is sound and fulfilling its office, your whole body is full of light; but when it is not sound and is not fulfilling its office, your body is full of darkness. Be careful, therefore, that the light that is in you is not darkness. If then your entire body is illuminated, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its bright rays gives you light.

scripture

John 14:21

“Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."

quote

But however long you may have continued in rebellion, and how ever black and long the catalog of your sins, yet if you will now turn to God by a sincere repentance, and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, you shall not be cast out… No one was ever saved because his sins were small; no one was ever rejected on account of the greatness of his sins. Where sin abounded, grace shall much more abound.

scripture

Romans 3:10-18

As it is written:

"There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one."

"Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit."

"The poison of vipers is on their lips."

"Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness."
"Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know."
"There is no fear of God before their eyes."

thought

Talking with my neighbor I found out that he goes to church when he feels he needs it. Everything is gravy as long as he is helping people. He said that he wasn’t out killing people so he felt he was pleasing God. I wonder how many people are basing God’s favor on their perceived goodness. I could run as fast as I think I need to but just because I think that I am fast won’t get me onto the track team. We have to judge ourselves by the standard that we are going to be held against. We need to use the bible to show them God’s standard. Only then can they see that their goodness is a filthy rags before God and that we are justified by the blood of The Lamb.
