Afghanistan

Here is what my parents get to be a part of while they are in Afghanistan.

We did a medivac today for Medair from Kwakhan to Faizabad. We were contacted yesterday middle of the afternoon for this urgent medical flight, so that that lady whose baby had supposedly died in her womb would not also die. When they brought her to the aircraft today, she was not doing well at all. From what I could understand from the conversation, she had been transported across the river days earlier to Tajikistan, where they could not help her. She was then brought back to her village and home to basically die. However, she was then brought into the Medair clinic there, from where they asked us to do this flight.

If you look at the email below, you can see, that the baby is not dead after all. The medical staff told us numerous times, that if we did not help with this flight, the lady would not have made it. However, now I am not so sure what the problem was... at least she is doing better and now she has a son who is still alive, and THAT is the important thing!

scripture

Luke 9:57-58

As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."

Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."

quote

Many years ago Rudyard Kipling made a commencement address at McGill University in Montreal.  He said one striking thing which deserves to be kept in remembrance.  He was warning the students against an overconcern for money, or position, or glory.  He said: “Someday you will meet a man who cares for none of these things.  Then you will know how poor you are.”  That has happened on a grand scale.  Jesus cared for none of these things.  And for nineteen centuries he has led many people to see how poor they are with only a collection of things to show for their journey through life, and no spiritual resources.

scripture

Philippians 2:1-4

If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

quote

Doing nothing for others is the undoing of one’s self.  We must be purposely kind and generous, or we miss the best part of existence.  The heart that goes out of itself, gets large and full of joy.  This is the great secret of the inner life.  We do ourselves the most good doing something for others.
