People love to think of Jesus as their Savior, and they should do so.

When they neglect that He is also their Lord, then they are imagining a Jesus of their own creation.

God framed the history of the world in view of the coming of Jesus Christ.  In the very beginning He chose a family whose line of descent should run directly from Eden to Bethlehem.  This family God took into covenant with Himself, and the promise of the covenant was that of its seed Christ should be born in the fullness of time.  This covenant-line runs through the whole of the Old Testament as the golden thread runs through the beautiful fabric.  Everything centers in this covenant-line.  It unifies the Old Testament.  It is the cord upon which the pearls of history are strung.  Keep this in mind, and it will explain a thousand mysteries and perplexities in reading the Old Testament.

Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Addison Road: Casualties

He sees his life just pass by
Just another number in a suit and tie
No purpose here nothing to give
Is this what it means to really live?
His feet never touch the ground
His days fly by, he can't slow down

(CHORUS)
Casualties of the American dream
Have we lost our vision
Drifting off and living
Half asleep with a faint heartbeat
Just dying to be revived
I want to be revived

She's screaming out, "I've lost control"
Caught in another undertow
She's only barely hanging on
Been holding her breath for so long
Her feet never touch the ground
She's not sure which way is up or down

I want to be revived
I want to feel alive
And in a world so numb
Don't let me become another
Casualty living in this dream
Yeah

I want to be revived

Matthew 13:36-43 (The Parable of the Weeds Explained)

Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field." He answered, "The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. "As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.”

If Jesus came back He wouldn’t clean the temple, He’d cleanse the pulpit. We are in grave danger when we let our accomplishments become the ground of our confidence. Oh boy, how we want to be esteemed, how we want to be respected, how people should realize what precious the gifts of the spirit I’ve been given. You know why they don’t? Because you stink with pride, that’s why.

One day Napoleon ran his index finger round a great country, he was talking to his generals and he said, "There lies a sleeping giant, LET IT SLEEP!! Because," he said, "if that country ever wakes up and harnesses it's man power to it's mineral power it will shake the world." The country he outlined, in case you are interested, was none other than China, our biggest headache. See the devil standing there, he isn't running his finger round a map, he is running his finger round the church of Jesus Christ and he says, "There is the church of Jesus Christ asleep, LET IT SLEEP!!" "Because if it ever rediscovers the power of the Holy Ghost, if it ever rediscovers the resurrection power of Jesus, it will shake the world."

Mark 3:1-6

Another time he went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand up in front of everyone." Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent. He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.

Going Green

It seems the "three R's" of old (reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic) have been replaced by three new "R's": reuse, repurpose, recycle.

When it comes to recycling, we have the best of all possible examples . . . Jesus. He's the ultimate Recycler. Think about it: he reuses worn out, used up, broken people and makes them into brand-new creations. He's amazingly efficient, too, never wasting any experience or situation. As Romans 8:28 reminds us, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God" (En Espanol)

On our end, it's not just used paper or plastic that can be turned into something more useful. Perhaps you have an attitude that could benefit from recycling? Maybe it's time to repurpose a habit of worrying or complaining into the practice of gratitude for the gifts God has given. Think of the energy that would save!

The Father sent His Son down
The light of men
The cross He bore was crippling
Rejected in His own town
They couldn’t see the sun shining
He knelt in the garden and prayed
Father, let this cup pass from me
It’s not Your will for me to stay
Your will for me is the opposite way

And it seemed like He was locked in a cage
And He couldn’t find away of escape
But through the cross He conquered the grave
My Jesus ran the opposite way

Oh, and through the cross He conquered the grave
Oh, He ran the opposite way
Yeah, through the cross He conquered the grave
So you could run the opposite way

A recipient yesterday made a valid point that in other cultures outside of western society male friends hold hands as do female friends hold hands in western society. Could it be that this person did not intend for their comment to be taken as I understood it? Another question which this recipient raised was, why isn’t it just as revolting to see violence? Why do we crave seeing fights in sports or in our movies?

While on a trip in the Middle East I was walking with my wife, an American, and an Arab. As we walked I felt a hand slide into mine and turned, knowing that it wasn’t my wife, and saw my Arab friend next to me. I was initially puzzled and turned to my American friend who had seen what happened and was laughing at us. My wife too joined in the laughter while my Arab friend, still holding my hand, asked what the funny was. Then he realized what it was about and said, “Oh, you don’t hold hands in America but we’re not in America and you are my friend”. All the way to our destination we walked and talked while holding hands.

The thought was meant to stir the emotions of the readers and force them to reflect and ask questions.

The way the paper read to me was “war/violence is bad” but “homosexuality is fine”. The hand written part below it saw nothing wrong with either scenario.  I am not pacifist yet I do think that violence should be avoided and that peace should be pursued. I agree with Augustine of Hippo that we should hate the sin but love the sinner. I understand through Scripture that the homosexual lifestyle is contrary to God’s will. As Christians we should lament when we see that which is contrary to God’s will. In seeking Truth we must challenge all truth claims by holding it up the Bible, which is God’s standard.

On campus we have a Wittenberg door on which people can post articles or papers which address issues of the day. Today I walked by and noticed a paper on which was an image and a quote. The image was of two soldiers with machine guns. The quote read, “Why is it that as Christians we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns then seeing two men holding hands?". Beneath that was hand written – “If either of those were sins then you’d have a point”. Wow. Often lately I have been grieved with the condition of the church. Where are we getting our truth? Is it from the Word of God or is it from the world?

He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? He who belongs to God hears what God says. As if I'm jumping off a cliff
knowing that you'll save me
and after all the stupid things I did
there's nothing left that you'd forgive
because you already forgave me
yeah you already forgave me

Never forget
there's life after death and taxes
Forgiveness come
and all of the rest
is what passes away
Death and decay can't touch us now

idea

Friday 9/12 was the National Day of Encouragement.  Here is the website http://www.letsencourage.com/pages/page.asp?page_id=33765. There are ideas on the webpage on how to encourage the others in your life.  For example, send an email to your co-workers letting them know what you appreciate about them.

scripture

John 15:9-17

Jesus speaking to his disciples said, "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. This is my command: Love each other.

scripture

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

quote

A real Christian is an odd number. He feels supreme love for One whom he has never seen; talks familiarly every day to Someone he cannot see; expects to go to heaven on the virtue of Another; empties himself in order to be filled; admits he is wrong so he can be declared right; goes down in order to get up; is strongest when he is weakest; richest when he is poorest and happiest when he feels the worst. He dies so he can live; forsakes in order to have; gives away so he can keep; sees the invisible; hears the inaudible; and knows that which passes knowledge.

QUOTE

To live by grace means to acknowledge my whole life story, the light side and the dark. In admitting my shadow side I learn who I am and what God's grace means. As Thomas Merton put it, 'A saint is not someone who is good but who experiences the goodness of God.'

SCRIPTURE

Ester 4:12-14

When Esther's words were reported to Mordecai, he sent back this answer: "Do not think that because you are in the king's house you alone of all the Jews will escape. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?"

SCRIPTURE

1 Samuel 16:7

QUOTE

My friend told me that Jesus never spoke to a prostitute. I was astounded that he could say such a thing. Of course he did. I pulled out my sword ready to do battle and he said, “Jesus never saw a prostitute. He saw a child of God with whom He was dearly in love with”.

Scripture

 Luke 1:77-79

Zechariah filled with the Holy Spirit prophesied saying, “And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace."

Scripture

John 12:44-46

Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.

When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”

The daily Word

scripture

Ephesians 5:14-16

For it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

quote

One day Napoleon ran his index finger round a great country, he was talking to his generals and he said, "There lies a sleeping giant, LET IT SLEEP! Because," he said, "if that country ever wakes up and harnesses it's man power to it's mineral power it will shake the world." …See the devil standing there, he isn't running his finger round a map, he is running his finger round the church of Jesus Christ and he says, "There is the church of Jesus Christ asleep, LET IT SLEEP! Because if it ever rediscovers the power of the Holy Ghost, if it ever rediscovers the resurrection power of Jesus, it will shake the world."

THE DAILY WORD

scripture

Mark 10:13-16

People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.
