scripture

Matthew 19:21

Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.  Then come, follow me.”

thought

Brennan Manning said that maybe we have highlighters so we can pay attention to what we like and ignore the rest. If that is not true then what are we doing about this verse?

scripture

Psalm 23:1-6

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

scripture

1 John 4:19-21

We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

thoughts

He who has been forgiven much should also forgive much.

scripture

Matthew 18:21-22

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven.”

Read the parable Jesus presented to further illiterate this teaching.

thoughts

The world likes the idea of love but only if it does cost anything, only if it is easy. God calls us to love until it hurts and then to love some more.

scripture

1 John 2:15-17
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

quote

Not till the loom is silent

And the shuttles cease to fly,

Shall God unroll the canvas

And explain the reason why

The dark threads are as needful

In the weaver's skillful hand

As the threads of gold and silver

In the pattern He has planned.

thought

We cannot put our hope into this fleeting world, nor can we put it into imperfect people. We must put our hope in God. He is the only one worthy of placing our hope in.

scripture

Philippians 1:3-6

I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

quote

Proverbs 21:21

He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor.

All that which pleases is but for a moment.

All that which troubles is but for a moment.

That only is important which is eternal.

thought

I am reading a book called Amish Grace. It describes the Nickel Mines School shooting, the events that followed, and investigates the forgiveness shown by the Amish community. In the book an Amish man says, “Hate is poison that erodes the vessel which contains it.” Pause and think about this.

scripture

Isaiah 40:28-29
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

scripture

Galatians 5:6

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

quote

Merit earned love isn’t really love.

thoughts

The focus on right theology has overshadowed the need for right orthopraxy. Many Christians today can explain passages of scripture very intelligently but few can explain how it should be lived. What good is right theology if our lives do not reflect its content?
