Psalm 19:14
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

It is good to be tired and wearied by the futile search after the true good, that we may stretch out our arms to the Redeemer.

name

Another name of God is Haggo’el, The Redeemer.  This name is used in Psalm 19:14 and 17 other verses in the Old Testament.  Have you ever prayed using a name of God?  How might you use Haggo’el or My Redeemer in your prayers this week?

scripture

Nehemiah 9:17

They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them,

En Espanol, Nehemías 9:17

name

The verse above calls God - Eloah Selichot, The God of Forgiveness.  God’s forgiveness is gracious, compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, even in the face of rebellion and disobedience as we read of in Israel’s history and even our own.

Imagine that you have been limited to using just a single word or phrase to describe something of significance. How would you describe the earth?  How would you describe your city?  How would you describe your life experience?  This limitation would make your description greatly inadequate.  By using multiple words, images, and metaphors descriptions can become more encompassing, full, and robust.  As the sun has a single source but has many rays, so is the singular nature of God known through His many attributes.  Thus, I would like to look at names of God given in Scripture, which testify of His nature.  By looking at the names of God, my hope is that we all will be shown new and exciting ways to know and experience God.

scripture

Exodus 3:13-15

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you’.”  God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation”.

En Espanol, Éxodo 3:13-15

thought

The primary name of God is YHVH, which is the personal name of God.  YHVH appears in the Hebrew Bible over 6,800 times.  The Hebrew verb used here means “I will”.  The Hebrew rendering of this name is “I will be what I will be”.  This name tells that “YHVH is the Source of all being and has being inherent in Himself”.

scripture

I John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

En Espanol, 1 Juan 1:9

James 5:16

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

thought

I scratched the outside of my thumb about four weeks ago.  The scratch turned into a red welt which I’ve been ignoring all this time.  This morning I took a closer look at the welt and realized that something was stuck in there.  I pushed around on it and out came a splinter!  For almost four weeks I’ve been thinking that this welt was just a scratch, something trivial that did not require my attention.  Below the surface however was a foreign object that was not being dealt with.  This made me wonder: Do I have unconfessed sins?  Am I harboring bitterness, withholding forgiveness, denying brokenness that needs healing?

Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.

quote

A man can no more take in a supply of grace for the future than he can eat enough for the next six months or take sufficient air into his lungs at one time to sustain life for a week.  We must draw upon God's boundless store of grace from day to day as we need it.

scripture

1 Samuel 16:6-7

When Jesse and his sons arrived, Samuel noticed Jesse's oldest son, Eliab. "He has to be the one the LORD has chosen," Samuel said to himself. But the LORD told him, "Samuel, don't think Eliab is the one just because he's tall and handsome. He isn't the one I've chosen. People judge others by what they look like, but I judge people by what is in their hearts."

quote

In his book Irresistible Revolution, Shane Claiborne tells of a friend who told him that Jesus never saw a prostitute.  Immediately Shane opened his sword (Bible) to do battle. He was looking in the gospel accounts for when Jesus did in fact come in contact with prostitutes during His ministry.  Shane’s friend stopped his search and said again, “Jesus never saw a prostitute.  He only saw someone that He was madly in love with.”

I first wanted to provide “thoughts” but I have a different idea instead. If you want to share your thoughts and/or questions about the scripture and quote pairing, then reply and I will post them on the site for our mutual edification and continued dialogue. scripture

Romans 8:35-39

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” (Psalm 44:22) No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

En Espanol, Romanos 8:35-39

quote

Watch constantly against those things which are thought to be no temptations. The most poisonous serpents are found where the sweetest flowers grow. Cleopatra was poisoned by an asp that was brought to her in a basket of fair flowers. Sharp-edged tools, long handled, wound at last.

Charles Spurgeon

scripture

James 1:13-15

When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

En Espanol, Santiago 1:13-15
