Oops!  This morning I learned that some dW recipients are getting little boxes where their text characters should be.  If this has been happening to you, please go to http://the-daily-word.blogspot.com/ to catch up.  I will keep the message as a standard font style so as to avoid this issue in the future.

scripture

Luke 10:27

He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

scripture

Luke 14:26-33

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.”

En Espanol, Lucas 14:26-33

scripture

Matthew 19:23-24

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

En Espanol, Mateo 19:23-24

scripture

Matthew 6:14-15

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

En Espanol, Mateo 6:14-15

quote

When a person forgives another, he is promising to do three things about the intended wrongdoing: not to use it against the wrongdoer in the future; not to talk about it to others; and not to dwell on it himself.

note

Jesus was “meek and mild” but He was not a wimp.  He was radical.  He had no problem, when it was within the Father’s will, to upset the apple cart.   He challenged the teachings of the religious elite.  Often Jesus would practice Torah intensification, which shattered the common understandings thereof to teach the true meaning of God’s Law.  This is a quick blurb to set us up for a series of dW emails that are going to focus on the tough sayings of Jesus.

A particular dW recipient will, at times, respond to a “hard hitting” dW with “<krunch> That was the sound of my toes getting smashed”.  When I shared the idea of doing this series he said, “We could call this the Smashed Toes Ministry”.  Ready or not, here they come!

scripture

Matthew 10:32-39

“Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven. Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”

quote

Some people will say God is number 1, family is number 2, ministry is number 3.  No, no, no!  God is not to be a number on your list.  He is the list.  Either He comes in to take over and He doesn’t come in at all.

scripture

Colossians 3:12-14

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

thoughts

Have you ever gotten an overwhelming sense of your own imperfections?  This week, in addition to praying that God help me deal with stress more gracefully, I’ve been praying that He give the people around me a greater measure of patience and mercy to employ toward me too.  Oh how much I have to grow in this process of pressing forward in the process of allowing God to transform me into the person He intended me to be.  May we all get an occasional glimpse of our own imperfections so that we can be more forgiving of them in others.

1 Timothy 4:8

For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

En Espanol, 1 Timoteo 4:8

thoughts

Sadly, Jack Lalanne died recently. He was the father of the fitness craze. His healthy living and fitness may have helped him live until he was 96. Then again, one of my neighbors loved junk food, didn't work out, and made it to 100 years. So, I ride a bike to work each day, and down a daily half a glass of carrot juice, and that's all I'm doing to try and extend my life. This is because I took to heart 1 Timothy 4:8, and the bumper sticker that said, "Eat Right, Exercise, Die Anyway." Jack Lalanne worked out for two hours a day, even into his 90's. He once boldly said, "Billy Graham's for the hereafter. I'm for here now." Not anymore.

message

When this started, I was pulling verses from a desktop card holder that had topics with scripture on both sides of each card it held.  I went to the dailyWord archive this morning and saw that it goes back to February 1, 2007.  The first post notes that it all started back at the beginning of May in 2005.  Wow, it is hard to think that this has been going on this long.  The number of recipients has gone up and down over the years.  The distribution list currently has 93 recipients on it.  I have heard from some recipients that they have created their own distribution lists that they then forward to.  I get excited thinking about how many people this is reaching and the impact that is being made.  There is nothing necessarily special about me.  There is nothing necessarily special about this little email.  Most simply and honestly put, there is power in the Word of God.  (Isaiah 55:11/IsaĆas 55:11)

Shalom, Kyle

scripture

Hebrews 10:23-25

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

En Espanol, Hebreos 10:23-25

quote

Can I be a Christian without joining other Christians in the church?  Yes, it is something like: being a soldier without an army, a seaman without a ship, a business man without a business, a tuba player without an orchestra, a football player without a team or a bee without a hive.

scripture

Proverbs 18:24

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

En Espanol, Proverbios 18:24

quote

The best neighbors I know anything about are my two hands.  They have lived on opposite sides of the street for many years, and they have never had a row.  If my left hand is hurt, my right hand immediately drops all other business and rushes across the way to comfort it, and help it out of its trouble.  If one happens to hurt the other, the (one that is ) hurt doesn’t get in a huff and say, “Here, I will not stand for that; you can’t treat me that way,” and get in a fight.  No, no, no.  They are good neighbors.  My two hands are members of one another.  And Christians should be like that.  They are members of Christ’s body.  They should be as loving, as forbearing, as sympathetic and helpful toward each other as are my two hands.

scripture

Ecclesiastes 2:21-23

For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun? All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless.

En Espanol, EclesiastƩs 2:21-23

quote

There is a burden of care in getting riches; fear in keeping them; temptation in using them; guilt in abusing them; sorrow in losing them; and a burden of account at last to be given concerning them.

Matthew Henry

thought

Some people say that money is the root of all evil.  However, the correct sentiment is that money is the root of all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10 English/Espanol).  Money is amoral; it is neither good nor evil.  That which money is used for and the intentions behind the use thereof is where the verdict lies.
